Hello friend,
I just stopped sweating from my third 5 K (3.1 miles) this week. I am starting to feel much better. I have no idea what I am doing, except to know that I am really starting to enjoy running. Days when I don't run, I do not feel as well?! Am I going to turn into a crazy runner? Maybe. I'd rather be a crazy runner than a blob. My shoes came. I've only gone 6 miles in them, but they are great!
My auntie Tina (personal trainer, aerobics instructor, encouraging, fit since the beginning of time) and every fitness book I read say that strength training is the way to get into shape and stay in shape.
Why is that?
Did you know a resting pound of muscle burns 50 cal a day? and a resting pound of fat (is there any other kind?) only burns 5? These numbers are from my memory and are approximate.
The math-
So if I have 20 pounds of muscle (and I have no idea if I do)-- that would mean that it burns 1,000 calories a day, just sitting there.
and 20 pounds of fat (I know I do have!)- would only burn 100 calories a day!
The books say every year after 30 that a women loses a pound of muscle a year if she doesn't fight to keep it.
50 calories a day x 365 days a year = 18, 250 less calories burned in a year. Divide that by 3,500 calories (calories I need to burn to lose one pound) = 5 pounds gained every year- even if my eating were to stay the same.
We have to fight, fight to the death, ladies! Those men have the muscles that is the way they are made. ---we have to fight to keep them. We have to work like dogs- it is just the reality.
I have been waiting for the day that I would be thinner or at least fit :), as if it would just sneak up on me some day. Waiting to figure it out, waiting for some magic pill.
I found the magic pill--- fight to the death!
SO ALL THAT TO SAY- I started lifting weights too and will fight to the death.
My grandma Helen is an example of this to me as well. She is 87 and can skip in heels and sit cross-legged on the ground.
I stayed with them the night before my wedding with all my bridesmaids and friends in their big "Leave it to Beaver" style house. It was a gift. I had the gitters and was SOO excited I couldn't sleep. I got up early and crept downstairs. What did I find? My grandma and grandpa outside on the patio running in place on a pile of carpet samples. They moved next to a stationary bike, and then to weights and a rowing machine. They wore jogging suits that had been around for a long time. This routine was a habit of their life.
Then they came in and had their coffee, eggs and bacon.
That is a good way to spend the morning!

I think we've both seen "You've Got Mail" one too many times :)
haha MEgan...I was thinking the same thing!
Becca, what a great memory of grandma and grandpa! An example to us all!!
I cannot seem to find the energy to work out...I have zero time away from my kids, so walking to the park is about the only thing I can think of....ug!!
Wow, Becca! I really need to start working out... :)
I know, I've only watched You've Got mail once this year, but I sure love it!!! he he! :)
Shauna, Sorry to not have time away from the kiddoes. Could you fast walk with the jogging stroller? Strap them in with snacks and toys and put in your headphones and walk like the wind? or maybe when Abby is at school? I know that is easier said than done. I could never do it with the kids. I end up walking like a snail while the children look for bugs or something. :)
That is why I love my treadmill. I put on a movie for them and give them a snack and then I hop on and jog. Or a jog while Peter is home (easiest option) Hang in there. They will get bigger soon. Can you believe Sierra will be 3 soon? I can't a 3 and 5 year old. Time flies.
Jayme, you can do it!!!
