The Relief of Imperfection- Take 2

After reading the article yesterday, I was also laughing at my cleaning methods.

On Saturday, I had a goal to deep clean the kitchen. The entire room was in ruins.

Again, this room hosts the kitchen, entry way, mudroom, fireplace and the laundry room and it is one of the messiest places that can be imagined. We take off our shoes at the door, but because of the snow, mud had been tracked in and the floor was in some desperate need of scrubbing. The laundry was piled up ready to be washed. The dishes lined the counter top. I had made lots of bread the previous day and there was flour everywhere. Lovely!

What did I start cleaning in this room? I scrubbed the stove knobs with a toothbrush. Did I even wipe the top of the stove first? NO- I started right on the knobs.... it took a lot of scrubbing. But no one in their right mind would have noticed the stove knobs being clean amongst all that mess!

That article pointed out to me my desire to have things perfectly cleaned, but not having the time or discipline to actually do it. So instead of starting with the big and necessary thing like sweeping the floor, I scrubbed the knobs!!! At least the knobs on the stove were perfectly clean, right?!

I like Good Housekeeping magazine. Their cleaning section has two sections 1. Good and 2. Good Enough. Sometimes good enough is just that enough--- the relief of imperfection.

Becca, you crack me up! I don't know why, but this morning when I got up and made my way to the stove to make a cup of tea, the "I've got to figure out a way to clean these darn stove handles" is what I said to myself. Thanks for the tip! By the way, the rest of the stove is dirty too but sometimes I think it is ok to focus on one difficult spot at a time. I want to clean my closets too but I'm not sure any cleaning will actually happen today:) TTFN Mom

LOL. That is so funny! I know I've done that type of cleaning countless times!
