Do you want the bad news first, or the good?

Today I finished the breakfast dishes- my favorite job ;)- and to my dismay- I found the sink wouldn't drain. Sad.

"Oh no" I think--- "It's frozen." I start imagine myself carrying out buckets of dirty dish water and throwing them in the yard from now until mid June- as I had to do in 2005 and 2006. I frown. I whine, and I nearly cry.

Then I think, "Oh, maybe it is just the exposed pipe in the root cellar." That would be great!!! I can just get down there with my blow dryer! A flicker of hope.

Our root cellar is a hole underneath my kitchen. It is used for storing root crops like potatoes. This year I didn't use it because I was a lazy gardener! :(

We pry open the root cellar "door" in the floor. It is really just a hole in the floor to climb through.

We were SHOCKED...

The sink pipe wasn't attached inside of the drain pipe--- So for who knows how long (3 months since we re- siliconed our sink) the sink has been draining INTO THE ROOT CELLAR- UNDER THE HOUSE!

So I will be able to ignore that mess until the spring thaw. Weston heard me talking about cleaning up that BIG mess and said, "oh mom, that won't be that hard to clean, you just need a mop."
I said, "A shovel will be a better tool, I think!" It has a dirt floor, so we'll be shoveling stinky mud and hauling it up the rickety ladder in May!

The good news?
  1. The GIANT and I mean G-I-A-N-T, mess from the sink water is frozen, thick and solid. It is like an ice rink down there.
  2. The pipe is very, very, very easy to thaw!!! Just put it into a pitcher of boiling water- done! I have a sink again!
Some pictures hopefully worth a 1000 words:
the hole in the floor- "root cellar"
The boiling water in the pitcher---
Peter smiling at me-
I say, "I know I'm annoying, taking pictures."
He said, "Well at least you know," and then he laughed!Yay--- The thaw!!! Now we can imagine accurately what it looked like each time I've drained my sink for the last months!---yuck!
Attaching the pipes together properly!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
What a bad thing to have happen. You will have a mess to clean up that is for sure. Some bleach is a good idea when that starts thawing. Just get rid of the fumes before going down there.

I thought the idea behind root cellars was that they don't freeze. So much for that idea.

Sad that you have this problem to deal with on top of everything else. Good Luck.

Love,
Dad

What a horrible thing to look forward to---I'm so sorry!!!! Maybe some of it will just soak into the ground???? Wishful thinking! You will probably need masks when you are dealing with it, fot health and safety.
That is just the pits! (Literally!)
Love You!

Oh man! What a bummer!! At least your trusty hubby fixed it for you! Yeah peter!

Here's a thought...come May, make it a "science experiment" lesson and have Weston help. hehe! I'm so mean. :)

How thick is the ice? wouldn't it be easier, less smelly, and healthier to break up the ice and haul it out instead of waiting for it to melt and then having all that yucky water going into the ground water so close to your water supply?

I'm so sorry that it happened, but so happy that you found it when you did!
